SCREEN USE

Dear parents/guardians. Could you help us? We will be looking at the pros and cons of screen use, but we would like to hear what you think about this topic.

You might want to consider:

  • is it a positive/ negative influence
  • time spent on devices
  • social impact
  • educational/ recreational advantages

By 'screen use' we refer to the use of computers/ 'devices' for educational or recreational purposes.

Please do not sign off with your real name.

Many thanks for your help.

I think it's important in this day and age that children are used to using devices and technology as this is increasingly how the world is. It will give them a greater advantage in further education and employment. I think it is great that they have so much knowledge at their fingertips that makes it easy for them to learn and enables them to discover so much and even contact people anywhere in the world. However I do feel that that recreational use is very addictive and affects sleeping patterns and concentration if not monitored.

Pros - Devices support learning, provide access quickly to a huge body of information, offer a different view point, bring the world into your living room, enable people to keep in touch. It links to the world of employment - need to apply on-line, use of technology in the work place - emails, spreadsheets etc. Can be a tool for parents and children or groups of children to work on together, it can raise awareness and money for charities, it can highlight an issue world wide quickly - e.g. single use plastics.

Cons - They can distract the user from other important things going on in the 'real' rather than 'virtual world'. They can swallow up time, without the user being aware of how ling they are engaged on the technology. It is a relatively new world, a place where people are still learning how to behave on it, there is an opportunity for users to be exploited or harmed. There is the opportunity for people to feel they can say what they think, without realising there are consequences. For the world of work, some employers check social media to see who they are interviewing, it may stop someone getting a job.

Hope this helps.

I do think technology plays an important role in educational learning as it does help in many ways. I also think that children need to learn the cons of being on technology for long periods as this does affect their sleep and social life.

I think it's important for children to use all resource available to them. The younger they are when they are introduced to things, the easier they seem to pick it up. I do feel that computer & internet use should be monitored & that children should understand dangers of the internet. I think it's important for children to be joining in with hobbies & socialising, rather than just being engrossed in conversation through social media.

I think that it could also be dangerous for children especially when they are on the internet
