Life in Y5

Class: Year 5 Year: 2021 - 2022

Come and take a look at what we get up to!

Autumn Term

Here are just some of the things we have been busy doing this term:

  • We reached our first 'Extra Step Award'. We decided to play parachute games in the hall to celebrate!
  • Forest school was cold but fun. At the start of December we collected natural materials from the school grounds and used these to make Christams decorations. A cup of hot chocolate warmed us up after our morning on the field.
  • In Science we have been investigating forces. We used a parachute to explore the force of wind resistance and to see how it would impact on our speed. The parachute slowed us down. We had lots of excellent ideas about why this was.
  • On a trip to Eccleston Library, we met Kate who introduced us to the BASH books(Book Awards St Helens). Mrs McCahey is reading 'The Last Bear' to us and we are taking it in turns to read the other books independently.
  • A trip to the Imperial War Museum North, helped us with our understanding of WW1. We were asked to make a documentary about objects in the WW1 gallery. We discovered that this was quite a tricky business! Unfrotunately, it was very dark in the museum and so our photos are also quite dark.
  • We finished the term with our Christmas celebrations. We worked hard preparing songs to perform for our adults. Our Santa Dash was a great way to use up our excess energy!
  • In music we have been listening to the Bosa Nova style of Jazz. We used the glockenspiels and our own instruments to join in and improvise. You will notice that the cellos are being plucked in the jazz style and are not being played with the bow.
  • In DT we have been investigating cam mechanisms and looking at how they can change the movement of an object.

Spring Term

  • Crucial Crew - we attended a series of workshops with the emergency services. We looked at how to keep safe in different situations.
  • In science we have been learning about Earth and Space. We went on the playground to investigate why different planets have different lengths of year. We were very surprised to discover how long it took some planets to orbit the sun.
