Maths

In Year 2 we begin by learning all about PLACE VALUE and how to partition 2 digit numbers.

We will then continue to learn and use our Number Bonds to 10, so that we can add and subtract larger numbers. (If I know 4 + 3 = 7  then 40 + 30 = 70)

We will be adding and subtracting one digit numbers to two digit numbers and later in the year we will be learning to use partitioning to add 2, two digit numbers and write our working out.

(Below is an example for parents of how we write this in Year 2 BUT Remember we can always still draw our tens and ones pictures to help us if we need to)

24 + 35 =            (Partition both numbers)

20 + 30 = 50

4 + 5 = 9

50 + 9 = 59

...and to subtract a two digit number from a two digit number

75 - 53 =          (Remember keep the whole number whole)

75 - 50 = 25

25 - 3 = 22

We will be practising our counting in 2's, 5's and 10's so that we can begin to learn our 2, 5, 10 Time Tables and say them 'off by heart'.

Try to practice counting in 2's, 5's and 10's whenever you can. Little and often is the key! Good Luck!

We have sent out Times Table Rockstars password so that you can practise to become a Times Table Hero.
