Celebration of the Word, Prayer and Worship

At St Julie Catholic Primary School, Christ is at the centre of all that we do. Prayer and worship are central to our Catholic identity and provide opportunities for children to encounter Jesus, reflect on God’s Word and grow in their relationship with Him.

Our Celebartion of the Word planning is supported by a range of high-quality resources, including ROOTS Children & Youth, which helps us to explore Scripture, reflect on Gospel values and develop meaningful worship experiences for our pupils. ROOTS themes are carefully adapted to ensure that our celebrations remain rooted in Catholic Scripture, the teachings of the Church and the liturgical year.

Through Celebration of the Word, children are encouraged to listen to God’s Word, respond through prayer and reflection, and consider how they can live out their faith through love and service.

We provide a rich variety of prayer and worship opportunities across the school year, including:

• Class Celebration of the Word

• Key Stage and whole-school Celebration of the Word

• School Masses and liturgical celebrations

• Class Masses

• Traditional Catholic prayers and devotions

• Rosary prayer

• Personal prayer and moments of reflection

Prayer Themes

Each week, prayer themes and Scripture readings are shared  throughout school. These themes follow the Church’s liturgical year and support our pupils in developing a deeper understanding of Scripture and prayer.

Families are invited to share in our worship journey at home through the termly prayer themes and opportunities to continue reflection and prayer together as a family.

Worship Welcomers

Our Worship Welcomers are pupils who volunteer to support and lead prayer and worship across our school. They follow in the footsteps of Jesus by helping others to encounter God through prayer, Scripture and reflection.

Our Worship Welcomers:

• support assemblies with prayer, readings and drama

• share ideas with staff to help bring 

• faith to life

• use role play to help pupils explore Bible stories

• support and lead class Celebration of the Word

• encourage others to take part in worship

Through this ministry, pupils develop confidence, leadership skills and a greater understanding of their role within our Catholic community.

Year 6 Prayer Buddies

At the beginning of the year, our Year 6 pupils become Prayer Buddies with children in Reception. This special partnership allows our oldest pupils to support our youngest children as they begin their journey of faith at St Julie’s.

Throughout the year, Year 6 pupils accompany their Prayer Buddies at Masses and services, modelling prayerful behaviour and helping them to feel confident during worship. They also spend time together sharing faith books, prayers and reflections.

This beautiful tradition celebrates our school family and allows children to learn from and support one another.

Rosary Prayer

Prayer through the Rosary is a special part of our Catholic life, particularly during the months of October and May, which are traditionally dedicated to Mary.

Each October, members of our Rosary Group visit Year 3 to introduce children to the Rosary, helping them to learn about the prayers and the Mysteries while discovering how Mary leads us closer to Jesus.

During October and May, Rosary bags are sent home with children so that families can pray together and share this special devotion. The bags provide an opportunity for children and families to explore the Rosary at home through prayer, reflection and activities.

When possible, children also enjoy praying the Rosary Walk in our prayer garden, gathering together around the statue of Our Lady.

Through these opportunities, children develop their own prayer life, deepen their relationship with Jesus and experience the joy of belonging to a praying Catholic community.
