Relationships Education
Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
At St Julie’s Catholic Primary School, RSHE helps our children to grow into happy, healthy, confident and responsible young people. Our teaching is rooted in our Catholic faith and our mission:
“We are a caring family school where we learn, grow and walk in the footsteps of Jesus.”
We teach children that every person is created and loved by God and has unique dignity and worth.
Our RSHE Curriculum
RSHE is taught progressively from Reception to Year 6 and is carefully matched to children’s age, maturity and individual needs.
Our main Catholic programme is A Journey in Love, which supports children’s emotional, physical and spiritual development. Learning is complemented through PSHE, Religious Education, Science, PE, safeguarding and our wider personal development curriculum.
The revised Department for Education statutory guidance, effective from 1 September 2026, places particular emphasis on healthy relationships, physical and mental wellbeing, online safety, personal safety, boundaries and helping children recognise when and how to seek help.
A Journey in Love
Children's learning develops progressively as they move through school:
- Reception: The wonder of being special and unique
- Year 1: We meet God’s love in our family
- Year 2: We meet God’s love in the community
- Year 3: How we live in love
- Year 4: God loves us in our differences
- Year 5: God loves us in our changing and developing
- Year 6: The wonder of God’s love in creating new life
Teaching is age-appropriate and sensitive, helping children understand themselves, build healthy relationships, respect others and understand the changes that take place as they grow.
Working with Parents
We recognise parents and carers as the first educators of their children and value the partnership between home, school and parish. Parents are welcome to view our curriculum information and resources and to speak to us about their child’s learning.
Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory. Parents cannot withdraw children from these areas or from relevant National Curriculum Science. Where additional sex education is taught at primary school, parents have the right to request withdrawal from some or all of that provision.
